Invisalign Q & A
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a teeth-straightening system that uses sets of transparent thermoplastic aligners to straighten your teeth gradually. It’s a discreet, less intrusive alternative to braces. It’s perfect for adults who never got braces as a kid, teenagers who want straight teeth without full metal braces, or adults who want to re-straighten their smile.
What are the benefits of Invisalign over braces?
Invisalign aligners are the perfect alternative to braces because they are practically invisible and easily removable. They also:
- Require fewer appointments
- Involve no dietary restrictions
- Don’t cause gum and lip irritation
How does Invisalign treatment work?
You have a consultation with Dr. Berry to discuss your goals and make sure Invisalign is appropriate for you. He uses digital photos and models of your teeth to generate 3d images. The software allows you to see your current alignment and preview what your teeth will look like at the end of treatment. Dr. Berry uses those readings to map out your specific treatment plan.
Next, the lab creates sets of aligners for you, based on your digital readings. Each week or two, you switch to a new aligner that uses a fine-tuned amount of force in exactly the right places. You wear the clear aligners 20-22 hours a day and continue changing out the mouthpieces weekly until treatment is over, usually around one year.
You visit Dr. Berry every six weeks or so and he assesses your progress.
How do I take care of my teeth with Invisalign?
You care for your teeth the way you always do, by brushing twice a day, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash. You can remove the aligners when you eat and brush your teeth. Oral care and meals account for the two to four hours you won’t be wearing the aligners.
To clean the aligners themselves, you can either use the Invisalign® Cleaning System or brush and rinse them with lukewarm water. Make sure to brush your teeth after meals to prevent food stains on the clear plastic. Never expose the aligners to hot water because it can warp them, making them ineffective.
If you’ve always wanted a straighter smile without the metal braces near you, contact Dr. Berry online or by phone today to discuss the possibility of Invisalign.
